al-Aziz (the Chief Minister)
Al-Aziz was the chief minister or treasurer of Egypt during the time of Prophet Yusuf AS. He is identified in Islamic tradition as holding the title al-Aziz (meaning 'the mighty one' or 'the minister'), and classical sources including Ibn Kathir name him Qitfir ibn Rahib. He corresponds to Potiphar in the Biblical account. When the slave traders who pulled Yusuf AS from the well brought him to Egypt and sold him, al-Aziz purchased him. The Quran records his purchase and his instructions to his wife: 'Make his stay comfortable. Perhaps he will benefit us or we will adopt him as a son' (Surah Yusuf 12:21). Al-Aziz recognized something extraordinary in the young Yusuf. His household prospered with Yusuf's presence. The central trial of Yusuf's time in al-Aziz's house was the attempt by al-Aziz's wife Zulaykha to seduce him, and Yusuf's flight and her false accusation. When al-Aziz came upon the scene — his wife blaming Yusuf, Yusuf protesting innocence — it was al-Aziz's own cousin who solved the case with the logic of the torn shirt. Al-Aziz acknowledged the truth: 'Indeed, it is of the women's plan. Indeed, your plan is great.' He asked Yusuf to keep quiet about the incident. When the women of the city later gossiped about Zulaykha, al-Aziz attended the dinner she arranged as a demonstration. After Yusuf was imprisoned (at Zulaykha's insistence), al-Aziz fades from the narrative. He is a figure of measured justice — not a villain but a man whose weakness in handling his wife's infatuation led to an innocent man's imprisonment. He serves as the backdrop against which Yusuf's extraordinary character shines.
