Ubaidullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah ibn Masud was a leading Tabi'i scholar of Medina and one of the Seven Jurists of Medina — a select group of Tabi'i scholars whose legal opinions shaped the foundations of early Islamic jurisprudence in the Hejaz. He was the great-nephew of the companion Abdullah ibn Masud, may Allah be pleased with him, and narrated from prominent companions including Aisha, Ibn Abbas, Abu Hurairah, and Ibn Umar. He was a primary teacher of the great Imam Muhammad ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, who learned extensively from him and transmitted many of his narrations. He was regarded as one of the most learned men of Medina in his generation, with expertise in fiqh, history, poetry, and prophetic biography. Hadith scholars praised him without reservation as thiqah (trustworthy) and among the most reliable of transmitters. His narrations appear extensively in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and all four Sunan collections, and he is one of the most frequently cited Tabi'i scholars in the classical literature. He died approximately around 94–98 AH.
