Abd al-Malik ibn Abdallah ibn Yusuf al-Juwayni (419โ478 AH), known as Imam al-Haramayn (Imam of the Two Sanctuaries), was one of the greatest Shafi'i jurists and Ash'ari theologians of the medieval period. Born in Juwain near Nishapur, he succeeded his father as a leading scholar. He taught in Makkah and Madinah for several years (earning the title Imam al-Haramayn), then returned to Nishapur where he headed the Nizamiyya madrasa. His most famous student was Abu Hamid al-Ghazali. His major works include al-Irshad in theology and al-Burhan in usul al-fiqh, both foundational texts in Ash'ari-Shafi'i tradition.
