Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the first Ansari child born in Medina after the Hijra. His father Bashir ibn Sa'd and his mother Umm Abd — the sister of Abdullah ibn Rawahah — were both companions. He was brought to the Prophet as an infant. He later served as governor of Kufa and then Homs under Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan and was martyred in Syria around 65 AH. He is most famous for narrating one of the most important and most widely cited hadith in the entire corpus: the narration comparing lawful and unlawful matters to clear white and clear black, with a gray zone of doubtful matters in between, and warning that whoever avoids the doubtful protects his religion and honor. This hadith, known as the 'Halal and Haram are Clear' hadith, is considered one of the forty foundational hadiths of Islam by Imam al-Nawawi. He also narrated hadiths on the prohibition of accepting gifts that favor one child over another. His narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and all major Sunan collections.
