Muhammad ibn Umar Nawawi al-Bantani (1230–1316 AH / 1813–1898 CE), known as Nawawi al-Jawi, was the most prolific Indonesian Islamic scholar of the 19th century. Born in Banten, Java, he traveled to Mecca and settled there, spending his life teaching and writing. He produced over 100 works in Arabic on fiqh, tafsir, hadith, usul, and tasawwuf, making him among the most prolific Arabic-language authors of his century. His tafsir Marah Labid (Tafsir al-Munir) is a comprehensive Shafi'i commentary widely read in Southeast Asia. His works on fiqh, including his commentary on Safinah al-Najah, are standard texts in Indonesian Islamic schools (pesantren). He trained generations of Indonesian scholars in Mecca.
