Muhammad ibn al-Walid al-Fihri al-Tartushi (451–520 AH / 1059–1126 CE) was an Andalusian Maliki jurist from Tortosa who traveled east, studied in Iraq and Egypt, and eventually settled in Alexandria where he taught and produced important works. His Siraj al-Muluk (Lamp of Kings) is a treatise on statecraft from an Islamic perspective, addressing the duties and conduct of rulers. His al-Hawadith wa al-Bida' (Occurrences and Innovations) is an important early work criticizing blameworthy innovations in religious practice. He was a significant figure in the Maliki scholarly tradition and trained important scholars in Alexandria.
