Hisham, as referenced in hadith chains, most often refers to Hisham ibn Urwa al-Asadi al-Madani, a prominent Tabi'i scholar and hadith narrator of Medina. He was the son of the great Tabi'i jurist Urwa ibn al-Zubayr and a reliable transmitter of both his father's narrations and those of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). He is among the most frequently cited narrators in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. He narrated from his father, from Aisha directly, and from other Companions and Tabi'in. He later moved to Iraq and transmitted there, which allowed the Medinan scholarly tradition to reach the Iraqi scholars. He was considered thiqa (trustworthy) with high precision by the major critics, though some noted that certain of his later Iraqi transmissions showed slight weaknesses compared to his Medinan narrations. He passed away in Baghdad around 145–146 AH. His narrations are foundational in the chains connecting Aisha's knowledge to the major collections.
