The chain 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb from his father Shu'ayb from his grandfather' refers to a well-known isnad in hadith scholarship connecting three generations: Amr ibn Shu'ayb (d. 118 AH), a Tabi'i scholar, his father Shu'ayb ibn Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Amr (a Tabi'i), and his grandfather Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As — though some scholars identify 'the grandfather' as Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (RA), the prolific companion who narrated extensively from the Prophet ﷺ. Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (RA) was the son of the famous companion Amr ibn al-As (RA) and was himself one of the most dedicated early collectors of hadith, reportedly writing down prophetic sayings with the Prophet's ﷺ explicit permission in what he called the Sahifah al-Sadiqah, considered the earliest written collection of hadith. The chain through Amr ibn Shu'ayb from his grandfather was a subject of scholarly debate: some hadith critics (including Imam Ahmad and others) considered it acceptable and used it as proof, while others were cautious. The chain is found extensively in the Sunan of Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah. The narrations transmitted through this chain cover a wide range of fiqh topics including inheritance, marriage, commerce, and penalties, and they remain an important source in classical Islamic jurisprudence.
