Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir al-Ansari (RA) was born in Medina in 2 AH, making him one of the youngest companions. His father Bashir ibn Sa'd was also a companion, and his mother Amra bint Rawaha was the sister of the poet-companion Abdullah ibn Rawaha. When he was a few years old his mother brought him to the Prophet ﷺ, intending to make a gift of some property to him — the Prophet ﷺ asked his father whether he had given all his children the same gift, and when the answer was no, the Prophet ﷺ declined to be a witness to an unequal bequest, providing the basis for one of the most important legal principles on equal treatment of children. He narrated approximately 114 hadiths. He served as governor of Kufa and Homs under Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan. He was martyred around 65 AH during the period of strife after Yazid's death.
