Jarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him) was a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ from the tribe of Bajila in Yemen who embraced Islam in 10 AH, the Year of Delegations, near the end of the prophetic period. Despite his late conversion, he was honored greatly by the Prophet ﷺ, who was reported to have smiled whenever he saw Jarir and described him as resembling the prophets of the Bani Isra'il in appearance. Shortly after his conversion, the Prophet ﷺ sent him on a mission to destroy the idol Dhu al-Khalasa in Yemen, which Jarir accomplished with speed and efficiency, an action the Prophet ﷺ prayed for him in return. He narrated approximately 114 hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ, among the most famous of which is the tradition on nasihah (sincere counsel) — that religion is sincere counsel to Allah, His Book, His Messenger, the leaders of the Muslims, and the general community. He settled in Kufa and became one of the respected elder Companions there. He was known for his loyalty, his noble character, and his commitment to the Sunnah. He passed away in Kufa around 51–54 AH.
