Atiyyah al-Awfi al-Kufi was a Tabi'i scholar of Kufa who narrated from companions including Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and Abdullah ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them. He is known in particular for his transmission of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri's hadiths and for his exegetical narrations from Ibn Abbas, making him an important source in both hadith transmission and Quranic commentary. He reportedly served as a judge in Isfahan. Hadith scholars had varying assessments of his reliability: some accepted him as generally trustworthy, while others noted weaknesses — particularly the practice attributed to him of narrating from Muhammad ibn al-Sa'ib al-Kalbi under the name 'Abu Sa'id' and presenting these narrations as if from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, a form of concealment that troubled some critics. Despite this concern, his narrations appear in the Sunan of Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and Ahmad's Musnad, and are cited in Quranic commentary literature. He should be distinguished from the companion Atiyyah ibn Sa'd al-Awfi. His narrations contribute to the transmission of exegetical and legal knowledge from the companion generation through the scholarly networks of Kufa.
