Malik ibn al-Huwairith, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who came to Medina as a young man with a delegation from his tribe to learn Islam from the Prophet directly. He and his companions stayed with the Prophet ﷺ for approximately twenty nights, after which the Prophet gave them direct and detailed instruction on how to perform the prayer, famously saying: 'Pray as you have seen me pray.' This instruction — and the account of observing the Prophet's prayer firsthand — is among the most cited foundations in Islamic jurisprudence for the obligation to follow the exact form of prayer taught by the Prophet. He narrated hadiths specifically on prayer and the method of its performance, including detailed descriptions of the Prophet's physical postures and transitions. His narrations are foundational in chapters on salah (prayer) in all four major legal schools. His reports appear in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and the four Sunan collections. He settled in Basra after the Prophet's death.
