al-Hawariyyun (the Purified Supporters)
Al-Hawariyyun (the Disciples) were the close companions of Prophet Isa AS who believed in him and supported his mission. They are mentioned multiple times in the Quran (Surah Ali Imran 3:52, Surah al-Maidah 5:111-115, Surah al-Saff 61:14) and are presented as the model of full and unconditional commitment to a prophet. When Isa AS sensed disbelief around him, he called out: 'Who are my helpers toward Allah?' The Hawariyyun responded: 'We are the helpers of Allah. We believed in Allah, and bear witness that we are Muslims.' Their response to Isa's question in Surah al-Saff (61:14) is used by the Quran to call the believers to the same level of commitment: 'O you who have believed, be helpers of Allah as when Isa said to the disciples: Who are my helpers for Allah? The disciples said: We are the helpers of Allah.' In Surah al-Maidah (5:111-115), the disciples requested a table spread from heaven — a miraculous meal — as a confirmation of their faith and as a sign. Isa AS warned them of severe consequences if they disbelieved after seeing it, and Allah sent it. This table (al-Maidah) is what the fifth chapter of the Quran is named after. The Islamic understanding of the Hawariyyun differs from the Christian account in that Islam does not affirm the crucifixion, so the events surrounding the arrest and claimed death of Jesus are understood differently. The Hawariyyun continued spreading the original message of Isa AS after his elevation, though their teachings were subsequently altered. The number of twelve disciples is not specified in the Quran; that comes from Biblical tradition.
