Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman al-Absi, may Allah be pleased with him — this entry reflects the same great companion known elsewhere as Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, listed multiple times in the narrators data due to variations in how his name was recorded in hadith chains. He was the Prophet's ﷺ trusted confidant who alone knew the identities of the hypocrites in Medina. He was the foremost narrator of hadiths about the trials (fitan) of the end times, the characteristics of the Dajjal, and eschatological events. The Prophet ﷺ said of him: 'I kept something hidden that Hudhayfah knows.' Umar ibn al-Khattab would gauge whether a person had died as a hypocrite by observing whether Hudhayfah prayed his funeral prayer. He served as governor of al-Mada'in under Umar and Uthman and remained a beloved and feared figure for his knowledge of hidden matters. He narrated widely on the nature of tribulations, the proper conduct of Muslims in times of civil strife, and the signs of the Last Hour. He died shortly after Uthman's assassination, around 36 AH, in al-Mada'in. His narrations appear in all six major hadith collections.
