Ibn al-Salah

Uthman ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Salah al-Shahrazuri (577–643 H/1181–1245 M) adalah salah satu yang most important ahli haditss of the abad pertengahan periode, the author of Muqaddimah Ibn al-Salah (Introduction to the Sciences of Hadith), a work that became the standard textkitab for the formal study of hadith terminology and metodeology for all subsequent abad-abad.

He adalah from Shahrazur in Kurdistan and studied in Mosul, Khurasan, Bagdad, and akhirnya settled in Damaskus, where ia mengajar in the Dar al-Hadith al-Ashrafiyya — an institution specifically established for the study of ilmu-ilmu hadits. His tahun of ajaran there produced an enormous pengaruh on the Suriahn ulamaly tradisi.

His Muqaddimah organized and systematized all the various terminological distinctions that ahli haditss memiliki developed over abad-abad — the categories of authentic (sahih), good (hasan), weak (da'if), fabricated (mawdu'), and all their subcategories and conditions — into a coherent, accessible manual. Before his work, this terminology existed scattered across various kitab-kitab without a single clear reference. After it, every murid of hadith studied his Muqaddimah as the entry point to the science.

Later para ulama like al-Nawawi, Ibn Kathir, and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani either summarized, versified, or wrote extensive commentaries on his Muqaddimah, making it the foundation of five abad-abad of subsequent hadith metodeology para ulamahip.
