Abd al-Malik ibn Habib al-Sulami (174–238 AH / 790–853 CE) was the founding figure of Maliki jurisprudence in al-Andalus. He traveled east, studying under Imam Malik's students including Ibn al-Qasim and Mutarrif ibn Abd Allah, and returned to Andalusia with a thorough mastery of the school. He was the most learned jurist in Andalusia of his generation and is credited with establishing the dominance of the Maliki school there. He wrote prolifically on fiqh, history, and Quran commentary. His work al-Wadi'a is an early Maliki legal manual. He trained many scholars who carried on the Maliki tradition in Andalusia.
