Khalid ibn al-Walid, may Allah be pleased with him, known as the Sword of Allah (Sayf Allah al-Maslul), was one of the greatest military commanders in human history and a companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He was a skilled military strategist even before Islam, having been the chief cause of the Muslim setback at the Battle of Uhud through his tactical flanking maneuver. He embraced Islam in 8 AH, and the Prophet gave him the title 'Sword of Allah' upon his conversion. After accepting Islam, he led Muslim forces to extraordinary victories in Arabia, Syria, Iraq, and Persia, reportedly never losing a single battle. He personally participated in over one hundred engagements. He was later relieved of command by Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab, who feared the people might rely on him rather than on Allah. He died in Homs, Syria, around 21 AH, grieving that he died in his bed rather than on the battlefield. He narrated hadiths from the Prophet on permissible foods, military conduct, and moral matters, and his narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and other collections.
