Abdullah ibn Zayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) was a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ from the Ansar of Medina, best known for his role in the establishment of the adhan (call to prayer). He narrated that he saw the words of the adhan in a dream, came to the Prophet ﷺ and relayed it to him, and the Prophet ﷺ recognized it as a true vision and instructed Bilal ibn Rabah to learn it and call with it. This narration is preserved in the Sunan of Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, and others, and forms the primary textual basis for the wording and establishment of the adhan in Islamic jurisprudence. He participated in major battles including Badr, Uhud, and al-Khandaq. He is counted among the reliable Ansari Companions and his narration on the adhan remains one of the most practically consequential hadith in the entire literature, given that the adhan is called five times daily by hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide. He passed away in Medina in 32 AH.
