Khabbab ibn al-Aratt al-Tamimi (RA) was one of the very early Muslims in Mecca, having embraced Islam in approximately the fourth or fifth year of the prophethood. He was a blacksmith and iron-worker who was enslaved and thus had no tribal protection, making him particularly vulnerable to the Quraysh's brutal persecution of early Muslims. He endured some of the most severe torture recorded: hot irons were pressed to his back, he was made to lie on burning coals, and his back was permanently scarred. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him to pray for their relief, and the Prophet ﷺ gave him the famous response reminding him of the even greater tribulations borne by the believers before them. He narrated approximately 32 hadiths. He participated in the Hijra to Medina and all subsequent campaigns. He passed away in Kufa around 37 AH. His scarred body and steadfast faith made him a legendary figure of perseverance among the companions.
