Ma'qil ibn Yasar al-Muzani al-Basri, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ from the Muzayna tribe who participated in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah and the pledge under the tree (Bay'at al-Ridwan) — one of the highest honors in a companion's biography. He participated in military campaigns and after the conquests settled in Basra, where he became an important source of prophetic knowledge for the Muslims of Iraq. He is particularly known for narrating the famous hadith recommending the recitation of Surah Yasin for the dying — a narration preserved in the Sunan of Abu Dawud and cited across the Islamic world in the practice of reciting Yasin for those on the verge of death. He also narrated the Prophet's ﷺ guidance on the conditions for remarrying a woman who has been divorced three times (the prohibition of nikah tahlil) and other matters of family law. His narrations on social etiquette and the proper treatment of women are also notable. His reports appear in Sunan Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah. He passed away around 60 AH.
