المقداد بن عمرو
Al-Miqdad ibn Amr, known as al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad (through his adoptive relationship), was one of the earliest converts to Islam and one of the Seven Pioneers — the first Muslims to publicly declare their faith at Makkah despite the hostility of Quraysh. He emigrated to Abyssinia in the first hijra and later to Madinah. He holds the distinction of being the first Muslim to fight on horseback in the path of Allah — all other companions fought on foot in the early battles. At the Battle of Badr, when the Prophet consulted the companions about whether to engage the Quraysh force (which was far larger than expected), al-Miqdad spoke with famous courage: 'O Messenger of Allah, proceed to what Allah has commanded you. We will not say to you as Banu Isra'il said to Musa — 'Go you and your Lord and fight, while we sit here' — rather, we will fight at your right and your left, before you and behind you.' This declaration, reportedly bringing tears to the Prophet's eyes, preceded the Ansar's equally moving pledge. Al-Miqdad was known for his asceticism, his deep faith, and his sharp tongue against hypocrisy. He died in 33 AH near Madinah.
