Abu al-Darda, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ renowned throughout the Muslim world for his deep wisdom, profound asceticism, and his love of knowledge and worship. His full name was Uwaymur ibn Zayd al-Ansari al-Khazraji. He embraced Islam around the time of the Battle of Badr and quickly became one of the most spiritually elevated of the companions. The Prophet ﷺ paired him in brotherhood with Salman al-Farisi, and when Salman visited his home he found that Abu al-Darda's wife had stopped adorning herself because her husband had abandoned all worldly pleasures for worship — illustrating the depth of his asceticism. He settled in Syria and served as a judge and religious teacher there, becoming one of the most important scholars of the Levant in the first generation of Islam. He narrated hadiths on the virtue of knowledge, the Quran, worship, and spiritual guidance. The Prophet ﷺ reportedly called him 'the wise man of this community.' His narrations appear in all major hadith collections. He died in Damascus around 32 AH.
