Safwan ibn Muhriz al-Mazini al-Basri was a distinguished Tabi'i scholar of Basra renowned for his deep piety, sustained weeping out of fear of Allah, and extensive worship. He was among the ascetic scholars of the early Muslim community who combined rigorous hadith transmission with intense personal devotion. He narrated from the companion Imran ibn Husayn, may Allah be pleased with him, among other companions and senior Tabi'in. He is particularly known for his transmission of the famous hadith about the Day of Accountability: that a group of people will enter Paradise without reckoning, while seventy thousand others will be admitted in a single wave. This narration, preserved in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, is one of the most hopeful and frequently cited hadiths about the mercy of Allah on the Day of Judgment. Hadith scholars praised Safwan for his sincerity and reliability. He was one of the pious worshippers of Basra whose lives exemplified the integration of knowledge and practice. His narrations appear in both Sahihayn and in the major Sunan collections.
