صفوان بن أمية الجمحي
Safwan ibn Umayyah al-Jumahi (wafat sekitar 42 AH / 662 M) adalah seorang leading Qurayshi nobleman who underwent a gradual but complete conversion to Islam following the Conquest of Makkah in 8 AH. The son of Umayyah ibn Khalaf — who telah menjadi killed at Badr fighting against the kaum Muslimin — Safwan inherited ayahnya's social standing and his opposition to the new faith. He participated in several battles against the kaum Muslimin, including Uhud and Khandaq.
At the Conquest of Makkah, facing the overwhelming force of the Muslim army, Safwan intended to flee by sea. The Nabi ﷺ, aware of this, granted him a four-month guarantee of safe conduct through his cousin 'Umayr ibn Wahb. Safwan observed the events of the conquest and the subsequent Battle of Hunayn from within the Muslim ranks, technically as a non-believer but increasingly impressed by what he witnessed. The Nabi ﷺ, in a gesture of extraordinary generosity, lent Safwan a large quantity of armor for the campaign — which Safwan feared he would not be able to return. After Hunayn, Nabi ﷺ gave Safwan a large share of the spoils, reportedly an entire valley of camels, sheep, and cattle. This generosity overcame Safwan's remaining resistance, and he declared his Islam.
Safwan later said of Nabi ﷺ: 'He adalah most generous of all people, and he adalah most feared among people before I accepted Islam; but now, after I came to know him better, he adalah most beloved person to me.' He participated in the campaigns that followed and lived to see the establishment of the Islamic state. His story illustrates the power of Nabi ﷺ's ﷺ character and generosity as a means of transforming even committed opponents.
