Shamwil (Samuel) is the prophet of the Israelites who appears in the Quran (Surah al-Baqarah 2:246-248) as 'their prophet' โ the Quran does not name him, but Islamic scholarly tradition consistently identifies him as Shamwil, corresponding to Samuel in the Biblical account. After a long period of degradation following the era of Musa and Yusuf, the Israelites came to their prophet and demanded a king to lead them in battle against their enemies. The prophet warned them: 'What if you were prescribed fighting and you did not fight?' They insisted. The divine appointment came: Talut (Saul) was chosen as their king. The Israelites objected, noting Talut's lack of royal lineage and wealth. Their prophet delivered the famous Quranic verdict on what qualifies a leader: Allah has chosen him above you and has increased him in knowledge and physical stature. Leadership is not inherited by bloodline or purchased by wealth โ it is given by Allah based on capability and fitness. The sign confirming Talut's appointment was the miraculous return of the Ark of the Covenant (the Tabut) โ carried by angels โ to the Israelites. Shamwil is significant as the last judge-prophet of Israel before the era of kings, the prophet who bridged the gap between the post-Musa judges and the reign of Dawud AS. He is considered a prophet in Islamic tradition.
