The name Sufyan in hadith chains refers to one of two monumental authorities in Islamic scholarship. Sufyan al-Thawri (97โ161 AH) was the Kufan imam, master of hadith, and one of the greatest hadith critics of the second century โ Imam Malik called him 'the leader of the believers in hadith.' He was a prolific narrator, a strict critic of weak transmitters, and a scrupulous scholar who fled from rulers and positions of authority to preserve his independence. Sufyan ibn Uyayna (107โ198 AH) was a Meccan scholar, a major teacher of Imam al-Shafi'i and others, and one of the most authoritative transmitters of Hijazi and Kufan hadith traditions. Both are accepted as fully reliable by unanimous scholarly consensus. Al-Thawri was known for his encyclopedic mastery of hadith chains and his extreme caution in transmission, while Ibn Uyayna was known for his deep understanding of hadith meanings and his long life of teaching in Mecca to scholars from every part of the Islamic world. Their narrations are found throughout all six canonical collections and in every major book of Islamic scholarship.
