Tawus ibn Kaysan al-Yamani al-Hamdani was a leading Tabi'i scholar and jurist from Yemen. He was born around 33 AH in Yemen and narrated from a wide range of companions including Abdullah ibn Abbas, Abdullah ibn Umar, Abu Huraira, Zayd ibn Thabit, and Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them all). He was considered one of the most learned men of his generation, combining mastery of hadith with deep legal acumen. He was famous for his independence: he repeatedly refused gifts and financial support from rulers and governors, and famously refused to stand up for Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik (the Umayyad Caliph) at Hajj, which caused a commotion. He was known for his serious demeanor and profound asceticism. He passed away in Mecca around 106 AH during the Hajj season and was buried there.
