Ali ibn Abi Talib al-Hashimi (may Allah be pleased with him), referred to here as Ali (RA), was the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet ﷺ, raised in the Prophet's household from a young age, and the fourth Caliph of Islam. He was among the very first to embrace Islam — some narrations suggest he was the first male child to do so. His full name was Ali ibn Abi Talib ibn Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim. He married the Prophet's daughter Fatima and their sons al-Hasan and al-Husayn are among the most revered figures in Islamic history. He was renowned for his courage in battle, his depth of knowledge, his eloquence, and his spiritual insight. He served as the Prophet's representative on several key occasions and was instructed to remain in Medina in place of the Prophet ﷺ during certain expeditions. He narrated approximately 536 hadiths and his legal opinions and religious judgments are foundational references across all schools of Islamic thought. He was martyred in Kufa in 40 AH.
