Usama ibn Zaid ibn Haritha (RA) was the son of Zaid ibn Haritha — the Prophet's freed slave and adopted son before the prohibition of adoption in the legal sense — and was known as Hibb al-Nabi ibn Hibbihi (the beloved of the Prophet, son of his beloved). He was born in Mecca and grew up in the Prophet's household alongside al-Hasan and al-Husayn. The Prophet ﷺ showed him exceptional love and affection from childhood, often embracing him together with al-Hasan on his knee. At age seventeen or eighteen, the Prophet ﷺ appointed Usama as the commander of an army that was being assembled to campaign in the Levant — an appointment that provoked some murmuring due to his young age, which the Prophet ﷺ firmly defended. This expedition was completed under Abu Bakr's caliphate after the Prophet's death. He narrated approximately 128 hadiths. After the Prophet's death he retired to al-Jurf near Medina and refused to participate in the civil wars. He passed away around 54–59 AH.
