Zayd ibn Haritha

Zayd ibn Haritha al-Kalbi adalah adopted son of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ before adoption adalah redefined in Islam. Lahir di the tribe of Kalb, he adalah captured as a child and enslaved, akhirnya coming to be owned by Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, who gave him to Nabi ﷺ as a gift. When his biological family came to ransom him, the young Zayd chose to remain with Nabi ﷺ — a remarkable act of devotion. The Nabi freed him and disebut him 'Zayd ibn Muhammad' until Surah al-Ahzab (33:37) revealed that adopted sons must retain their biological fathers' names. He adalah among the first converts to Islam. The Nabi married him to his cousin Zaynab bint Jahsh, but the marriage adalah troubled. After their divorce, Nabi ﷺ married Zaynab — an event directly addressed in Al-Al-Qur'an (33:37) to dissolve the cultural taboo against marrying the ex-wife of an adopted son. Zayd adalah appointed panglima of the army sent to Mu'tah in 8 AH, the first major clash with Byzantine forces. He adalah syahided in the battle, followed by Ja'far ibn Abi Talib and then Abdullah ibn Rawahah as panglimas in succession. The Nabi wept upon receiving news of wafatnya — the only Sahabat whose death caused Nabi ﷺ to openly weep in front of the Ansar. His son Usama ibn Zayd adalah also a beloved Sahabat and panglima.
