دخول المدينة
The Prophet ﷺ entered the main settlement of Yathrib on a Friday in Rabi al-Awwal 1 AH, having spent approximately fourteen days at Quba and led the first Friday prayer in the valley of Banu Salim. He rode al-Qaswa and let the camel walk freely through the city without directing her path. Every clan offered to host him; he told them she was commanded. Al-Qaswa knelt at the land of two orphan boys near the Banu Najjar — a date-drying ground — and refused to move further. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'This, if Allah wills, is the abode.' Abu Bakr purchased the land for ten dinars over the orphans' offer to give it freely, and on this site Masjid al-Nabawi would be built. Anas ibn Malik, who was approximately ten years old that day, preserved the moment: 'I never saw a day more beautiful or more luminous than the day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina.' The women and children of the Ansar sang: 'Tala'a al-badru alayna min thaniyyat al-wada' — The full moon has risen over us from the valley of Wida'.' This song has been sung in Muslim communities across the world since. The connection to Banu Najjar was personally significant: it was the clan linked through family to Aminah, the Prophet's ﷺ mother — making the camel's choice almost a homecoming. The Prophet ﷺ stayed in the house of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari for approximately seven months while the mosque and adjoining quarters were built. Abu Ayyub insisted on sleeping only on the lower floor while the Prophet ﷺ slept above — he could not imagine standing above the Prophet ﷺ even while asleep. Abu Ayyub later died at the walls of Constantinople in the Muslim army besieging the Byzantine capital, buried there where Muslim armies would seek his grave for generations. His life — from host of the Prophet ﷺ in Medina to martyr at Constantinople — is the arc of the Ansar generation: welcome, service, sacrifice, death in the way of Allah. The arrival of the Prophet ﷺ in Medina transformed the city permanently. Yathrib ceased to exist that day; al-Madinah al-Munawwarah took its place.
