Detailed Distribution of Hunayn War Spoils

تفاصيل توزيع غنائم حنين

Al-Ji'ranah, near Mecca

The spoils of Hunayn were enormous: six thousand captives, twenty-four thousand camels, forty thousand or more sheep, and four thousand ounces of silver. At al-Ji'ranah, the Prophet distributed the spoils, giving generously to the newly converted Meccan leaders (mu'allafat al-qulub) to strengthen their attachment to Islam. Abu Sufyan, his sons Mu'awiyah and Yazid, al-Aqra' ibn Habis, Uyaynah ibn Hisn, and Safwan ibn Umayyah each received one hundred camels. Some of the Ansar were troubled that the new converts received more while they, who had fought and sacrificed for years, received less. The Prophet gathered the Ansar and gave an emotional speech: 'O Ansar, are you disturbed because I gave worldly things to people to bring their hearts closer to Islam, while I entrusted you with your Islam? Are you not satisfied that people go home with sheep and camels while you go home with the Messenger of Allah?' The Ansar wept and said: 'We are satisfied with the Messenger of Allah as our share.' The Hawazin delegation then came, and the Prophet returned all six thousand captives to them as a gesture of goodwill.
