Quraysh Delegations to Abu Talib

وفود قريش إلى أبي طالب

Mecca

As the Prophet's message gained followers, the Quraysh leaders sent multiple delegations to Abu Talib demanding he restrain his nephew. In the first delegation, they warned Abu Talib that Muhammad was insulting their gods and their ancestors' ways. In the second, they offered to give Abu Talib the handsome young man Umarah ibn al-Walid as a substitute son if he would hand Muhammad over. Abu Talib refused. In the third and most threatening delegation, they declared: 'We cannot endure this any longer. If you do not restrain him, we will fight both of you until one of us perishes.' Abu Talib, deeply distressed, informed the Prophet, who replied: 'O uncle, by Allah, if they placed the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left to abandon this matter, I would not do so until Allah makes it prevail or I perish in the attempt.' The Prophet then wept and turned to leave, but Abu Talib called him back and pledged: 'Go and say whatever you wish, for by Allah I will never hand you over.'
