The Story of Dimad al-Azdi's Encounter with the Prophet
قصة ضماد الأزدي
Dimad ibn Tha'labah al-Azdi was a man from Yemen who practiced ruqyah (spiritual healing). When he came to Mecca, the Quraysh told him that Muhammad was possessed (majnun) and suggested Dimad cure him. Dimad approached the Prophet and said: 'I treat people from jinn possession. Perhaps Allah will cure you through me.' The Prophet began by saying: 'Indeed, all praise is due to Allah. We praise Him and seek His help. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.' Dimad was so struck by these words that he said: 'Repeat those words to me, for they have reached the depths of the ocean.' He repeated the shahada three times, then immediately embraced Islam. He asked: 'Say them again, by your father!' and the Prophet repeated them. Dimad then pledged allegiance and returned to his people as a caller to Islam. This narration in Sahih Muslim shows the power of the Prophet's speech, which could transform hearts in moments.
