The Story of Julaybib

قصة جليبيب

Medina

Julaybib was a companion of unknown lineage and unattractive appearance whom Medinan society marginalized. The Prophet himself went to an Ansari family and proposed that they marry their daughter to Julaybib. The father hesitated and wanted to consult his wife, who initially refused. But their daughter overheard and said: 'Do you refuse the Prophet's request? Send me to him, for he will not ruin me.' She accepted the marriage on the Prophet's recommendation alone. Julaybib was later martyred in a battle. After the fighting, the Prophet asked: 'Is anyone missing?' The companions listed their known dead. The Prophet asked again: 'Is anyone else missing?' They said no. The Prophet said: 'But I find Julaybib missing.' They found Julaybib's body surrounded by seven enemies he had killed before falling. The Prophet cradled him in his arms and said: 'This one is of me and I am of him.' He repeated it three times. The Prophet dug his grave with his own hands and placed him in it. The story demonstrates Islam's categorical rejection of social hierarchy based on lineage, appearance, or wealth.
