Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib was the youngest and most beloved of Abd al-Muttalib's ten sons — famed in Mecca for exceptional beauty and noble character. He had barely escaped with his life when lots were cast and the lot fell on him to be sacrificed at the Ka'bah in fulfillment of his father's vow; he was redeemed only after one hundred camels were sacrificed in his place. His marriage to Aminah bint Wahb of the Banu Zuhra clan united two of the finest lineages in all of Quraysh, both tracing their ancestry through the line of Ibrahim and Ismail. Islamic tradition preserves a remarkable account surrounding the marriage: Abdullah carried a visible luminous mark — understood by scholars as the nur (prophetic light) of the final Prophet, passed through a chain of blessed ancestors. Women of Mecca who perceived this light reportedly made themselves available to marry him, hoping a son might carry it forward. On the day of his wedding to Aminah, the narrations state that the light passed from his forehead to Aminah — the divine preparation complete. Aminah herself reported that her pregnancy was unusually light and that she heard a voice announcing: "You are carrying the master of this nation. Name him Muhammad." This was a name virtually unknown in Arabia, yet chosen by Abd al-Muttalib who said he wanted both heaven and earth to praise his grandson. The joy of the union was short-lived. Abdullah departed for a trade journey to Gaza shortly after the marriage — some accounts say while Aminah was already pregnant. He fell ill on the return, staying with maternal relatives in Medina for about a month before dying at approximately twenty-five years old. Aminah received the news as a widow carrying her first and only child. She was left with five camels, a small flock of sheep, and the Abyssinian servant Barakah (Umm Ayman), who would care for the Prophet ﷺ throughout his childhood and remain by his side until her own death long after his. The marriage of Abdullah and Aminah stands at the threshold of the prophetic mission: the final convergence of noble lineages from which the Seal of the Prophets ﷺ would emerge.
