The Day of Arafah: The Greatest Day of the Year
The Greatest Day
The Day of Arafah โ the 9th of Dhul Hijjah โ is the pinnacle of the Islamic calendar and the heart of Hajj. The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Al-Hajj is Arafah" (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Nasa'i, Ibn Majah) โ a statement that concentrates the entire pilgrimage in this single day. Missing the standing on Arafah (wuquf) means missing Hajj itself, as no compensatory act can substitute for it. For those not performing Hajj, it is one of the most virtuous days of the year โ a day for fasting, supplication, and remembrance of Allah.
The Wuquf: Standing on Arafah
The wuquf (standing) refers to being present within the boundaries of the plain of Arafah at any point between the noon (Dhuhr) on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah and the dawn (Fajr) of the 10th. A pilgrim who reaches Arafah even for a brief moment within this window has fulfilled the essential wuquf. The Prophet (PBUH) stayed on the plain until sunset and then moved to Muzdalifah โ but the scholars agree that even brief presence is sufficient. The entire plain is a valid location: the Prophet (PBUH) said: "All of Arafah is the standing place" (Muslim).
What Pilgrims Do at Arafah
The primary occupation at Arafah is du'a (supplication) and dhikr (remembrance of Allah). The Prophet (PBUH) said: "The best du'a is the du'a of the Day of Arafah" (Tirmidhi). He stood at the location known as Jabal al-Rahmah (the Mount of Mercy) for part of the time, though the entire plain is equal in virtue. He (PBUH) supplicated abundantly, making the well-known du'a: "La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu al-mulk wa lahu al-hamd wa huwa ala kulli shay'in qadir" โ the best that the prophets before him had said. The hours between midday and sunset at Arafah represent the most intense concentration of ibadah in the pilgrim's Hajj.
The Sermon at Arafah
During the Farewell Hajj, the Prophet (PBUH) delivered his Farewell Sermon (Khutbat al-Wada') on the Day of Arafah, establishing the principles of the final Islamic community: the sanctity of life, property, and honor; the elimination of riba and blood feuds; the rights of women; the weight of the Quran and Sunnah as the twin guides. He asked three times: "Have I conveyed the message?" and the companions answered: "Yes." He then said: "O Allah, bear witness" (Bukhari and Muslim). This sermon is considered the most comprehensive ethical statement of the Prophet (PBUH).
Fasting Arafah for Non-Pilgrims
For those not performing Hajj, fasting on the Day of Arafah is one of the most rewarding single-day fasts in Islam. The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Fasting the Day of Arafah โ I hope that Allah will expiate thereby the sins of the year before and the year to come" (Muslim). This extraordinary double expiation โ past and future โ makes Arafah unique among fasting days. No other voluntary fast carries this explicit promise. The scholars agree that this fast is one of the most strongly recommended Sunnah acts for Muslims not in Hajj.
The Forgiveness at Arafah
Multiple authentic narrations describe the immensity of Allah's mercy on the Day of Arafah. The Prophet (PBUH) said: "There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafah. He comes close and then boasts about them to the angels, saying: 'What do these people want?'" (Muslim). This hadith reveals that Arafah is first and foremost a day of divine mercy โ a day when countless souls are freed from accountability for their past sins. The standing at Arafah mirrors, in miniature, the standing of all humanity before Allah on the Day of Judgment.
