Description of Hellfire (Jahannam) in the Quran and Sunnah
Hellfire (Jahannam) is the abode of punishment that Allah has prepared for the disbelievers and the disobedient. The Quran and Sunnah describe it in vivid terms to warn humanity and deter them from sin. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The Fire was shown to me, and I have never seen anything more terrifying" (Sahih al-Bukhari). Knowledge of the Fire is not meant to cause despair but to inspire vigilance, repentance, and gratitude for Allah's guidance.
The Nature of the Fire
The Fire of the Hereafter is beyond comparison with earthly fire. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Your fire is one-seventieth part of the Fire of Hell." Someone said: "O Messenger of Allah, it is enough as it is." He said: "It surpasses it by sixty-nine parts, each of which is like the heat of your fire" (Sahih al-Bukhari). The Quran describes its fuel: "O you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones" (Quran 66:6). It has various types of punishment: extreme heat, boiling water (hamim), a tree called Zaqqum whose fruit resembles the heads of devils, chains, and garments of fire.
Levels and Gates
The Quran mentions that Hellfire has seven gates: "And indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all. It has seven gates; for every gate is of them a portion designated" (Quran 15:43-44). Scholars have identified various names for the Fire in the Quran that some associate with its levels: Jahannam, Laza, al-Hutamah, al-Sa'ir, Saqar, al-Jahim, and al-Hawiyah. The lowest depths are reserved for the hypocrites: "Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire, and never will you find for them a helper" (Quran 4:145).
Categories of Inhabitants
The permanent inhabitants of the Fire are those who die upon disbelief (kufr) and polytheism (shirk). Allah says: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills" (Quran 4:48). As for sinful Muslims who die without repenting from major sins, the position of Ahl us-Sunnah is that they are subject to Allah's will: He may forgive them or punish them temporarily in the Fire, but they will eventually be taken out by intercession or by Allah's mercy. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of faith will be taken out of the Fire" (Sahih al-Bukhari).
Seeking Refuge from the Fire
The Prophet (peace be upon him) regularly sought refuge from the Fire and taught his ummah to do the same. Among the means of protection: the five daily prayers, charity (the Prophet said "protect yourselves from the Fire even with half a date," Sahih al-Bukhari), fasting ("fasting is a shield from the Fire," Sunan al-Nasai), crying out of fear of Allah ("No person who weeps out of fear of Allah will enter the Fire until milk returns to the udder," Sunan al-Tirmidhi), and frequent supplication for protection. The balanced approach is to live between hope in Allah's mercy and fear of His punishment, never being so hopeful as to be complacent nor so fearful as to despair.
