Ruqyah Shar'iyyah: Prophetic Spiritual Healing
What Is Ruqyah Shar'iyyah?
Ruqyah Shar'iyyah refers to the practice of reciting Quranic verses and authentic prophetic supplications for the purpose of spiritual and physical healing โ particularly for protection from and treatment of the evil eye (ayn), magic (sihr), and jinn-related afflictions. The term "shar'iyyah" (lawful) distinguishes this practice from prohibited forms of ruqyah that invoke other than Allah, use unknown or meaningless formulas, or rely on prohibited means. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) himself performed ruqyah, permitted it, and specified the conditions under which it is acceptable.
Prophetic Permission and Practice
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) performed ruqyah and had ruqyah performed on him. The hadith collections contain numerous narrations on this topic. The Prophet (PBUH) said: "There is no harm in ruqyah as long as it does not involve shirk." (Muslim) Aisha (RA) reported that when he was ill before his death, Jibril (PBUH) had performed ruqyah on him using specific formulas. After his death, Aisha (RA) would recite over him with the Mu'awwidhat (the last two surahs of the Quran) and pass her hand over his body. The most powerful and widely used ruqyah involves recitation of Surah al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi (2:255), Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq, and Surah al-Nas โ all identified specifically in prophetic narrations as formulas of protection and healing.
The Evil Eye and Its Reality
The evil eye (ayn) is affirmed as real in both the Quran and authentic Sunnah. Allah says: "And the disbelievers would almost strike you down with their glances" (68:51). The Prophet (PBUH) said: "The evil eye is real, and if anything were to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye." (Muslim) The evil eye can affect people, animals, and even inanimate objects. Protection from it is sought through the adhkar of morning and evening, through regularly reciting the Mu'awwidhat, and through du'a. If someone is affected, ruqyah is prescribed.
Magic and Its Treatment
Magic (sihr) is explicitly mentioned in the Quran (2:102) and is a major sin in Islam โ the one who practices it is committing an act of kufr. However, its effects on victims are real and may require treatment through ruqyah. The Prophet (PBUH) himself was affected by magic once, and Allah revealed to him the specific verses and supplications that resolved it (Surah al-Falaq and Surah al-Nas were among the revelations for this purpose). Treatment of sihr through ruqyah involves intensive recitation of Quran, particularly the passages identified in prophetic practice, combined with seeking sincere repentance and strengthening one's connection to Allah through worship.
Conditions of Valid Ruqyah
Scholars unanimously agree on three conditions for ruqyah to be valid. First: it must be performed using words and formulas from the Quran or authentic Sunnah only โ no unknown languages, foreign formulas, or invocations of other than Allah. Second: it must be performed in Arabic or in a language whose meaning is clearly understood โ gibberish or intentionally obscure formulas are prohibited. Third: it must not involve any element of shirk โ no seeking help from jinn, no talismans with prohibited content, no claims of access to the unseen. Any ruqyah that violates these conditions is impermissible. The believer is warned to seek only reputable, knowledgeable practitioners who work within these boundaries.
