Shafa'ah — Intercession on the Day of Judgment
Shafa'ah (intercession) is the act of pleading on behalf of another before Allah, particularly on the Day of Judgment. It is a matter of Ahl us-Sunnah's creed, affirmed by numerous Quranic verses and authentic hadiths. However, intercession is entirely subject to Allah's permission: "Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?" (Quran 2:255). No one intercedes independently; all intercession occurs only when Allah grants leave and is pleased with the one being interceded for: "They cannot intercede except for one whom He approves" (Quran 21:28).
The Grand Intercession (al-Shafa'ah al-Uzma)
The greatest intercession belongs exclusively to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). On the Day of Judgment, when humanity has been standing for an unbearably long time, they will go to Adam, then Nuh, then Ibrahim, then Musa, then Isa, each of whom will say: "I am not fit for it." They will finally come to Muhammad, who will say: "I am fit for it, I am fit for it." He will then prostrate before Allah and be inspired with praises he has never known before. Allah will say: "Raise your head, ask and you shall be given, intercede and your intercession shall be accepted" (Sahih al-Bukhari). This is al-Maqam al-Mahmud (the Praised Station) promised in Quran 17:79.
Other Types of Intercession
Beyond the Grand Intercession, several types are established in the Sunnah. The Prophet will intercede for people of Tawhid who committed major sins to be removed from the Hellfire. He will intercede for the gates of Paradise to be opened. He will intercede for Abu Talib's punishment to be lightened. Other prophets, angels, and righteous believers will also intercede by Allah's permission. Children who died before the age of accountability will intercede for their parents. The Quran itself will intercede for its reciters on the Day of Judgment: the Prophet said, "Recite the Quran, for it will come as an intercessor for its companions on the Day of Resurrection" (Sahih Muslim).
Conditions of Intercession
Two conditions must be met for intercession to occur: Allah must give permission to the intercessor, and Allah must approve of the one being interceded for. The Quran makes clear that intercession will not benefit disbelievers or those who died upon shirk: "So the intercession of intercessors will not benefit them" (Quran 74:48), referring to the polytheists. The people who benefit from intercession are the people of Tawhid who died believing in Allah alone but had sins that warranted punishment. This is why the Prophet said: "My intercession is for the people of major sins from my ummah" (Sunan Abu Dawud).
Earning the Prophet's Intercession
The Prophet taught specific actions that earn his intercession. Saying after the adhan: "O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the established prayer, grant Muhammad the wasilah and fadilah, and raise him to the praised station which You have promised him" (Sahih al-Bukhari). Sending salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet frequently. Living and dying upon Tawhid. The most deserving of his intercession is "the one who says La ilaha illAllah sincerely from his heart" (Sahih al-Bukhari). These teachings motivate the Muslim to maintain Tawhid, follow the Sunnah, and stay connected to the Prophet through regular salawat.
