English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via 'Affan, from Hammad, from 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib, from al-Sha'bi — that he said: 'On the day of Uhud, the women were behind the Muslims, dispatching the wounded polytheists [by killing them]. If I had sworn an oath that day, I would have hoped to fulfill it: there was not one of us who desired the world — until Allah (عز وجل) revealed: "Among you are those who desire this world, and among you are those who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you away from them to test you" [3:152]. When the companions of the Prophet ﷺ went against [his order] and disobeyed what they had been commanded, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was left with nine — seven from the Ansar and two from Quraysh — and he was the tenth among them. When they [the polytheists] pressed hard upon them, he said: "May Allah have mercy on the man who drives them away from us." A man from the Ansar rose and fought for a while until he was killed. When they pressed again, he said once more: "May Allah have mercy on the man who drives them away from us." He continued to say this until all seven [Ansar] were slain. the Prophet ﷺ then said to his two companions: "We have not done justice to our companions." Abu Sufyan came and called out: "Be exalted, O Hubal!" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Say: Allah is higher and more majestic!" They said: "Allah is higher and more majestic!" Abu Sufyan said: "We have al-'Uzza, and you have no al-'Uzza!" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Say: Allah is our Master, and the disbelievers have no master!" Then Abu Sufyan said: "A day for a day — like the day of Badr. One day for us and one day against us; a day we grieve and a day we rejoice. Hanzala for Hanzala, so-and-so for so-and-so." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "They are not equal! Our slain are alive and provided for; your slain are in the Fire being punished." Abu Sufyan said: "There was mutilation among the people — it happened without the knowledge of our council. I did not order it, nor forbid it; I neither liked it nor disliked it; it neither grieved me nor pleased me." They then looked and found that Hamza had been disemboweled and Hind had taken his liver and chewed it — but could not swallow it. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Did she eat any of it?" They said: "No." He said: "Allah will never allow any part of Hamza to enter the Fire." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then prepared Hamza for the funeral prayer and prayed over him. A man from the Ansar was brought and placed beside him, and [the Prophet ﷺ] prayed over him — then the Ansari was removed and Hamza remained. Then another was brought and placed beside Hamza, and [the Prophet ﷺ] prayed over him, then he was removed and Hamza remained — until [the Prophet ﷺ] had prayed over him seventy funeral prayers that day.'
