English Translation

'Affan narrated to us, Hammam narrated to us, Qatadah narrated to us, from Abu al-Siddiq, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'A man killed ninety-nine people and then asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth and was directed to a monk. He came to him and said: I have killed ninety-nine people. Can I repent? He said: After ninety-nine? So he killed him, completing one hundred. Then he asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth and was directed to a scholar. He said: I have killed one hundred people. Can I repent? He said: Yes, and what stands between you and repentance? Go to such-and-such village, for in it are people who worship Allah. Worship Allah with them and do not return to your village, for it is a village of evil. So he set out, and when he reached the halfway point, death came to him. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed over him. Allah revealed to [the village] of evil: Move away, and to the good village: Draw near. And He said: Measure the distance between them. They found him closer to the good village by a hand's span, so he was forgiven.'
