Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal al-Hashimi, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ and a member of the Banu Hashim clan, the Prophet's ﷺ own clan within Quraysh. He had the privilege of direct contact with the Prophet ﷺ and narrated from him. He also transmitted from senior companions including Umar ibn al-Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan, and Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, may Allah be pleased with them. He served as a governor in Basra under the Umayyad caliphate and was regarded as a figure of authority and religious knowledge in that region. His narrations cover various aspects of worship and legal rulings, and he transmitted reports that reflect the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ as well as the practices of the first caliphs. He was known to hadith scholars as a reliable narrator. His reports are found in the major hadith collections. He is sometimes known by the nickname 'Babbah' (a term of endearment), and his narrations preserve the Hashimite strand of prophetic knowledge for later generations of Muslims.
