Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam al-Asadi al-Qurashi (RA) was born in Medina in 1 AH — the first child born to the Muslim emigrants (Muhajirun) after the Hijra, and his birth was considered a blessed sign since the Jews of Medina had spread a rumor that they had bewitched the Muslims so they would have no children. The Prophet ﷺ performed the tahnik (softening a date and touching it to the newborn's palate) for him and named him. He was the son of al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam (RA) and the grandson of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (RA) through his mother Asma. He narrated hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ and from senior companions including Umar (RA) and Uthman (RA). He later became the Caliph in Mecca after refusing to pledge allegiance to Yazid ibn Muawiya, and he ruled from 64 AH until he was besieged and martyred by al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf in 73 AH.
