Alqama ibn Qays al-Nakha'i was one of the most senior and eminent Tabi'i jurists and hadith scholars of Kufa. He was among the closest and most devoted students of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), having attached himself to Ibn Mas'ud and absorbed his legal methodology, Quranic understanding, and prophetic narrations deeply. Scholars of Kufa treated Alqama's narrations from Ibn Mas'ud as authoritative, and his students โ including Ibrahim al-Nakha'i and others โ built their legal scholarship on his foundations. He participated in the Hajj with Ibn Mas'ud and memorized his practice of the rites in detail. He was known for his scrupulous honesty in narration and his strict personal piety. His legal positions were central to the Kufan tradition that eventually developed into the Hanafi madhhab. He narrated hadiths on prayer, pilgrimage, the Quran, and Islamic ethics. He passed away around 61โ62 AH in Kufa. His narrations are found in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and all the major Sunan works.
