Abdullah ibn as-Sa'ib al-Makhzumi al-Qurashi, may Allah be pleased with him, was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ and one of the foremost reciters of the Quran in the early Muslim community. He belonged to the Makhzum clan of Quraysh and embraced Islam, going on to become an acknowledged master of Quranic recitation. The Prophet ﷺ himself recognized his recitation, and he was later appointed as a teacher of Quran to the people of Mecca, a role of great prestige in early Islamic society. He was regarded as an authority on proper tajwid and the correct manner of reciting the Quran according to what he had heard from the Prophet ﷺ. Among his narrations are hadiths about the recitation during the Fajr prayer and the etiquette of Quranic recitation. His reports are preserved in the Sunan of Abu Dawud, al-Nasai, and other collections. Generations of reciters in Mecca traced their transmission back through him, making him a crucial link in the chain of Quranic preservation. He is counted among the major companion-reciters alongside Abdullah ibn Masud, Ubayy ibn Ka'b, and Zayd ibn Thabit.
