Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utba ibn Mas'ud al-Hudhali was a leading Tabi'i scholar and one of the seven great jurists of Medina. He was the nephew of the famous Companion Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), whose legal tradition and scholarly approach he continued. He narrated from Aisha, Ibn Abbas, Abu Huraira, Zayd ibn Thabit, and many other Companions, making him one of the most broadly connected Tabi'i scholars to the Companion generation. He was a master of Quranic exegesis, hadith, and Islamic jurisprudence and was considered one of the most learned scholars of Medina in his time. His students included the great Imam al-Zuhri, to whom he transmitted a large body of knowledge. He also taught Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, who deeply respected him. His narrations are found in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and the major Sunan collections. He passed away around 94–98 AH in Medina.
