Hakim ibn Hizam al-Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) was a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ with the remarkable distinction of being the only person in history known to have been born inside the Ka'ba. He was the nephew of Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, the first wife of the Prophet ﷺ, and was fifteen years older than the Prophet himself. He grew up among the Quraysh and was known before Islam for his extraordinary generosity, having freed one hundred slaves and provided for great numbers of pilgrims. He embraced Islam at the Conquest of Mecca in 8 AH. Despite his late conversion, the Prophet ﷺ treated him with great respect and gave him one hundred camels on the Day of Hunayn from the spoils — making him one of those referred to as al-Mu'allafa qulubuhum (those whose hearts were being reconciled). After his conversion he continued his tradition of generosity, eventually freeing another hundred slaves in Islam. He narrated approximately sixty hadiths, particularly on commercial ethics and the principles of honest dealing. He passed away in Medina around 54–60 AH at a very advanced age.
