أبو عثمان الصابوني
Imam
Abu Uthman Isma'il ibn Abdurrahman as-Sabuni (373-449 AH / 983-1057 CE) was a prominent Shafi'i jurist, hadith master, and preacher of Nishapur. He served as the khatib (Friday preacher) of Nishapur for many years and was one of the most respected scholarly figures in Khurasan in his generation. He studied under major scholars of his era including al-Hakim an-Naysaburi, al-Bayhaqi, and others.
As-Sabuni is best known for his work Aqidat as-Salaf wa Ashab al-Hadith (The Creed of the Salaf and the People of Hadith), a concise but authoritative statement of Athari theological principles. This work presents the doctrines of the early Muslim community (the Salaf) on the divine attributes, the Quran, predestination, faith, and other foundational issues, emphasizing adherence to the Quran and Sunnah without speculative interpretation. It is one of the most frequently cited early texts on Athari creed and is still studied in traditional circles.
He also narrated and transmitted hadiths from the major scholars of Khurasan and served as an important link in the chain of transmission for numerous narrations. His knowledge of hadith, combined with his judicial and preaching roles, made him one of the central scholarly figures in Nishapur in the 5th century AH.
As-Sabuni passed away in Nishapur in 449 AH. His Aqidat as-Salaf is a foundational text for the Athari understanding of Islamic creed and is regarded as an authoritative statement of the methodology of the people of hadith on matters of theology.
