Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi an-Naysaburi (398-468 AH / 1008-1076 CE) was a leading Quran commentator and the foremost pioneer of the science of Asbab an-Nuzul (the circumstances and occasions of Quranic revelation) in the classical period. Born in Nishapur, the intellectual capital of Khurasan, he studied under major scholars of the region including the distinguished Quran commentator Abu Ishaq Ahmad ibn Muhammad ath-Tha'labi.
Al-Wahidi's scholarly output was focused primarily on Quranic sciences. His three tafsir works represent different levels of depth: al-Wajiz (The Concise), a brief commentary; al-Wasit (The Intermediate), a medium-length tafsir; and al-Basit (The Extensive), his massive detailed commentary that drew extensively on classical Arabic philology and scholarly opinions. These three works together demonstrated a comprehensive approach to Quranic commentary that influenced subsequent mufassirun.
His most celebrated contribution to Islamic sciences is Asbab an-Nuzul (The Occasions of Revelation), which systematically collected and organized the reports explaining the historical circumstances surrounding the revelation of Quranic verses. This work became the foundational reference in its genre and is still widely used by scholars today. He also authored al-Iqna' in Arabic linguistics and works on the divine names.
Al-Wahidi was recognized in his lifetime as the leading authority on tafsir in Khurasan. He passed away in Nishapur in 468 AH, leaving a scholarly legacy that shaped the study of Quranic commentary and the science of Asbab an-Nuzul for centuries thereafter. His works continue to be published and consulted by students and scholars of Quranic sciences.
